Stewart Family Reserve 828 Clone Pinot Noir

With a reputation as an industry innovator in viticulture, the Stewart Family Reserve Clone 828 Pinot Noir represents our latest quest for excellence. The internationally renowned 828 clone is known for producing full flavoured fruit of exceptional quality and unique growing attributes, and as we found, matched ideally with our soil and terrior. During elevage it became clear that this Pinot Noir demanded the Stewart family’s approval for Reserve status and an independent, small batch bottling was done.

Tasting & Pairing

This wine is made by just using a single clone of Pinot Noir, the 828. The end result is a wine which is very distinct in style, unique in favour and made in small quantities (only 6 barrels). We felt it deserved to be bottled under its own label, something that has not been done since 2010. Aromas of bright red fruits, sweet spice and notes of earth rise from the glass. On the palate, flavors of ripe red cherry and preserved red berries provide a focused and elegant style of Pinot Noir. Pair with wild mushroom risotto, baked salmon or charcuterie.

Winemaking

The 828 Pinot Noir clone was imported and planted exclusively
at Quails’ Gate in 2006 with the intention of enhancing the depth
and complexity of our Pinot Noir programme. The first example of exceptional quality, these young vines are showing delicious red fruits and fabulous textural qualities. Fermented with natural winery yeasts for 26 days on skins and barrel aged in French oak barrels for 10 months. Cellaring of up to 10 years will allow this wine to develop the most sought-after complex and comprehensive characteristics that Pinot Noir can produce.
